Turning Ashes

Diamond
Formation Theory

In nature, diamonds are formed 150–250 km below the Earth’s surface under extreme heat and pressure.
We recreate this same High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) environment in our lab, using precision instruments that reach:

🔹 Temperatures of up to 3,000°K

🔹 Pressure levels of up to 60,000 bar

This allows us to turn cremains into a diamond in a controlled, traceable, and completely safe environment.

Why We Use Carbon from Ashes or Hair

The human body is made up of approximately 18–19% carbon, which is the key element in every diamond.
By extracting and purifying carbon from ashes or hair, we can grow diamonds from cremation that are chemically and visually identical to mined diamonds — but with far more meaning.
Nitrogen naturally present in the body can give a diamond a yellow tone.
To create colorless diamonds, we remove this nitrogen during purification.

Process

Step-by-Step: How We Create Cremation Diamonds

Material Inspection

We begin by analyzing your loved one’s ashes or hair to ensure enough carbon is present. If carbon levels are low, we may recommend providing an additional sample for backup.

We usually suggest our customers provide extra hair samples to keep them as a backup plan. In this stage, we use an element analyser to check the carbon content in the ashes or hair, ensuring your cremation diamond begins with purified carbon.

Stage 1
Stage 2

Nano Crystallization

We grind the remains into a micro-powder and place them in a gas-controlled chemical environment. Our impurity-removing agent binds to unstable elements, which are separated in a centrifuge process.

This ensures that only the cleanest carbon proceeds to the next stage.

Carbon Purification Process

We use two stages of purification:

Vacuum Heat Purification

🔹High temperatures eliminate oxygen and oxidizing agents

🔹Carbon is stabilized and protected for the crystallization phase

Wet-Chemical Purification

🔹Temperature-controlled and digitally monitored

🔹Carbon purity is increased to 99.99%

🔹Any remaining impurities are filtered out

This step is critical for producing flawless diamonds from ashes.

Stage 3
Stage 4

High-Pressure, High-Temperature (HPHT) Crystallization

The HPHT crystallization process transforms the purified carbon atoms into a genuine diamond.

In this stage, the purified carbon we got from the remains is turned into flake graphite in the shape of a cylinder. This cylinder is encased in protective elements, preparing the carbon for the final stages where pressure, insulation, temperature control, and protection will be required.

The crystallization process can take a modest number of days or sometimes months to complete; it all depends on the size and color of the cremation diamond.

Diamond Cutting and Polishing

After growth, your rough cremation diamond is cleaned and polished by expert cutters. We work only with professionals trained in cutting diamonds made from ashes, to ensure no damage and maximum brilliance.

Stage 5
Stage 6

Verification and Certification

Each SAINT DIAMONDS cremation diamond comes with a Certificate of Origin and a detailed analysis report, confirming that the diamond was created from your loved one’s ashes or hair. This documentation provides transparency and reassurance throughout your ashes to diamonds journey.

All laboratory data, chemical assessments, and process records can be independently verified by a certification body of your choice, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

We also use advanced examination techniques, including fluorescence and luminescence tracing with shortwave ultraviolet light — commonly used in diamond analysis.

While our cremation diamonds are chemically and visually identical to natural diamonds, our specialists are able to verify their origin.

From Purification to Crystallisation: How Ashes Become a Diamond

Before we begin the diamond-growing process, the ashes or hair go through a highly precise carbon purification phase to achieve a 99.99% purity level — an essential step in creating a flawless cremation diamond.

We reduce all impurities to just 1/500 of their original presence using advanced, medical-grade equipment. Every instrument is cleaned with ultrapure water — purer than standard drinking water — to ensure nothing interferes with the quality of the diamond.

We take extraordinary care at every stage of the ashes to diamond process because this isn’t just science — it’s something sacred.

Once the carbon is fully purified, it becomes the foundation of your memorial diamond.

In this stage, we remove any remaining oxygen or moisture, and begin the crystallisation process. Using High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) technology, we simulate the Earth’s natural diamond-forming conditions.

  • Time required: Up to 30 days

Because the process is slow and carefully controlled, the diamond develops a strong structure with minimal flaws — resulting in a gemstone that is as pure as it is personal.

Why We Do This

While our technology is advanced, our purpose is simple: to help people heal.

Each cremation diamond we create carries a story, a bond, and a piece of the person or pet you never want to forget.

This is why we commit to transparency, perfection, and empathy in everything we do — so that your diamond reflects not just light, but love.
